For my social change movement, I will discuss the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement is an international activist movement which originated in the African American community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism toward black people. Many things occurred for this movement to begin but really came into effect once African American people started getting gunned down by policeman. I can remember Trayvon Martin’s murder and the killer going free and the outcry it caused in our society.

The movement started in the black communities around the world, but social media made this movement a real “thing”. Today there are shirts, videos, hats, and just about anything else you can name to back this movement and get the word out. There are also many YouTube videos that can be viewed to explore more about the movement. Social media enables creates the path for BLM’s message to be heard loud and clear because you constantly hear something about this movement whenever a crime happens in the black community. I personally would want to hear more about the movement in our own community when blacks are killing blacks and not just when other races are the subject of the talk.

Today many get their news specifically from social media rather than watching the news because someone is always around with a camera to record what happened and footage is uploaded quickly and spread through many different avenues on social media. Social media gives us instant access to news that in the past took hours if not days to learn about. The Black Lives Matter movement will be around and in the publics eye and ear anytime something happens that the community feel is unfair to our black community which is a great thing because it keeps our voice heard during silent times.
